Descending dragons

The read driver for this trip, the seedling in my mind, was my need to see this incredible bay for myself. It is called Ha Long Bay. I knew this before, but I didn’t know that these words translate to ‘descending dragons.’ And that really is what it looks like. I’m going to start with an aerial picture stolen on the interwebs to show you what I mean.

Descending dragons of Ha Long

The way to experience this fabulous place is an overnight cruise on the small ships you see dotting the area. Things are just opening up here after covid so lots of things are closed and what is opened is not full or crowded. Our ship could hold about 20 people and we only had 10.

From the room and our private terrace at the front of the ship to the fabulous meals and all the caves, beaches, kayaking and exploring in between a stellar experience.

Hang Sung Sot

The sunrise, tai chi on the top deck with a raven,
the flag (and of course I sang out “Good morning, Vietnam!”)
and a perfect spot for my morning coffee.
See you again, Vietnam.
